11-09-2019

Veterans Dinner at the Legion Post 197 with 75 Veterans attending. Debbie Robinson was the speaker who talked about the loss of her husband, who served in Vietnam, and died due to illnesses from Agent Orange and the loss of her son who served in Iraq who died of a drug overdose while battling the effects of PTSD. She also mentioned that there is an abundance of help available to Veterans needing medical care as a result of Military service and that anyone needing help should contact their local Veteran Affairs Office. Bob Sopczynski and Dr. Oakes won the 50/50 drawings and Ron Volmering won the Patriotic blanket. A very nice meal was catered by Pat Emerick. God Bless America was sung with a closing prayer for peace given by acting chaplain Bill Wells.

2019 Post Picnic

Post picnic was held with 30 people attending. A good time was had by all, but weather was very cool and windy. There was lots of good food so no one left hungry.

Harbor Beach Chili Cook-off a Big Success

The annual chili cook-off sponsored by the Harbor Beach Chamber of Commerce was held on September 21, 2019 with 20 entries.  American Legion Post 197 finished tied for second place with H&R Block.   Congratulations to the First Methodist Church on their win.  As expected it was a wonderful day for chili tasting, everyone seemed to have a fun day.  A special thank you to all who helped.

2019 Cart Derby

Harbor Beach and American Legion Downhill Car Derby started on time at 9:00 AM.  Weather was very hot with high humidity, rain was a possibility but, held off until evening.  There were 39 drivers in 4 divisions, racing was intense with carts being improved by owners each year.  Racers came from as far away as Green Bay, Wisconsin.  There were 2 crashes but, nobody required medical attention.  As in previous years everyone had a great day of racing.

Veteran’s Fishing Outing

Veterans Fishing Outing.  There were 140 registered Veterans for this free event sponsored by The Thumb Chapter of The Michigan Steelheaders.  The weather was in the low 60’s with very little wind so it was very comfortable on the lake with only a slight chop on the water.  A great lunch was served after Art Farden of the Harbor Beach American Legion said grace.  There were many gifts given away to the Veterans.  In addition all Veteran’s received a free t-shirt and mini cooler.
