2021 Cart Derby Set for July 17th

Hi to all Cart Derby Fans, The 2021 Cart Derby is just over a month away. That means it is time to get our Carts ready to race and get your entry forms in. The race date is July 17, 2021 and entries are due by July 10th.  I have attached a copy or the rules packet, which also have the entry forms included. We are looking forward to a fun event so don’t get left out. Get your entry forms in soon. Invite your Friends and relatives to participate as well. If you cannot print these for whatever reason, I will be getting them out to City Hall, Library and Harbor Drug this coming week. If you have questions or comments, please contact me or a committee member. The contact numbers are on the information packet attached.

Tech Inspection starts at 8:00 and racing should begin by 9:00am.

Dedication of the Veteran’s Memorial Garden

Dedication of The Veteran’s Memorial Garden and Heroes Blvd. took place at the garden at 11:00 AM on July 4th, 2020. Those being honored were: Major Louis J Sebille Jr. (MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT), Cpl. Curtis J. Wells, Lt. Col. Bruce G. Johnson (MIA), Sgt Aaron Cutler Elandt, and PFC Brian Backus. Veteran’s Organizations performing the Honor Guards were American Legion Post 197, VFW Post 9344, AmVets Post 115, VFW Post 6013 and VFW Post 6965-TVO. Mayor Gary Booms talked about the need to recognize the Veterans that gave all to their Country and the hard work it took by members of the American Legion, individuals, organizations, City Hall employees, businesses, City Council, and other Veteran’s organizations to make it happen. Commander Robert Winkel of the American Legion Post 197 welcomed the families of those being recognized and expressed his deep condolences for their loss. A 21 gun salute was performed by members of American Legion Post 197 and VFW Post 9344 both of Harbor Beach. Tim Robinson Sgt At Arms presented each family with an ammo box containing 21 spent cartridges from the Firing Squad Ceremony. A closing prayer was given by acting Chaplin Bil Wells praising those that made the ULTIMATE SACRIFICE. In closing Rhonda King sang God Bless America.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 197 Harbor Beach Poppy Days Campaign Cancelled

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 197 Harbor Beach would normally conduct the annual Poppy Days Campaign during the month of May. Due to COVID-19, this will not be possible. We would like to thank our local businesses and the general public for their past  support for our veterans. We look forward to seeing you next year. For this Memorial Day, please remember all Veterans.

April is Child and Youth Welfare Month

Commander  Robert Winkel of American Legion Post 197 in Harbor Beach, Michigan has announced that April is Children and Youth Month.  Post 197 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 197 will participate in this observance at local, state, and National levels.  Commander Winkel listed three major areas of concern at all levels: Child health, Child safety and Family support.

Veteran’s Dinner – 2019


Veterans Dinner at the Legion Post 197 with 75 Veterans attending. Debbie Robinson was the speaker who talked about the loss of her husband, who served in Vietnam, and died due to illnesses from Agent Orange and the loss of her son who served in Iraq who died of a drug overdose while battling the effects of PTSD. She also mentioned that there is an abundance of help available to Veterans needing medical care as a result of Military service and that anyone needing help should contact their local Veteran Affairs Office. Bob Sopczynski and Dr. Oakes won the 50/50 drawings and Ron Volmering won the Patriotic blanket. A very nice meal was catered by Pat Emerick. God Bless America was sung with a closing prayer for peace given by acting chaplain Bill Wells.
