Commander Robert Winkel of American Legion Post 197 in Harbor Beach, Michigan has announced that April is Children and Youth Month. Post 197 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 197 will participate in this observance at local, state, and National levels. Commander Winkel listed three major areas of concern at all levels: Child health, Child safety and Family support.
A donation will be sent to the State Child and Youth Welfare Program annually and the Post will continue to participate in The Boys State Program if a candidate is available.
At the local level Post 197 will continue to support scholarship programs at the local high school, participate in the Oratorical Program, sponsor Little League Baseball, and provide Flag education programs for various groups including Scouts and students at the elementary and secondary schools. In addition the Post will continue to participate in the school home lunch program as well as providing Derby carts for those in need so that they too may be included in this community event sponsored by the City of Harbor Beach and American Legion Post 197. The Ladies Auxiliary will continue to provide school supplies to students in need of them, sponsor The Girls State Program and participate in the high school scholarship program providing one scholarship to a student going into the medical profession and one to a student pursuing a career in another field.
At the National level Post 197 will support Special Olympics and other Child Welfare programs.
Over the years the Legion has developed many programs to serve the youth of this Nation. By providing a solid foundation and opportunities for children to realize their future, we are helping to ensure our own.
